Depends on if Hub re-signs or resigns.

It's gonna be awkward when Calgary has to unload both pending UFAs before the playoffs. Then again maybe they will get nothing for them like Gaurdeau!

Florida was probably losing both those guys anyways after this year. Tkachuk is younger by a lot, but I wonder how much Tkachuk's numbers were inflated by Johnny and Lindholm's career years.

I agree. They SHOULD trade them if they are on the bubble of playoffs. If they make a deep run and they walk, they have cap space to make moves and collect picks and do a bit of a retool.

If Tkachuk gets 90+pts, its great for Florida too because Tkachuk is younger and has more good years ahead then Huberdeau, at the same price. Huberdeau's next contract will be bad in the last years, Tkachuk's shouldn't be.

Not sure how many teams were serious options for a long term extension with Tkachuk, but Treliving seems to have done as well as could be expected. Great to see blockbuster trades.

This deal is comically lopsided for Calgary. The biggest winner here is Tkachuk vis a vis take home salary, but man... That's a price to pay.

If Flames fall out of contention they can flip both guys for some major assets at the trade deadline. This gives them plenty of time to either sign them to extensions or deal them later. Great trade for them

Calgary lost this one almost as bad as losing Johnny hockey and Matthew Tkachuk! The two big stars they got from the Panthers are UFA's after next season and they are not going to resign with Calgary!!

Huberdog wrong side of 30. This could be ugly anyway if he signs longterm with Flames.

Exactly. Jonathan Huberdeau is more valuable to be than Matthew Tkachuk. Tkachuk is making 9.5m in a tax free state. That's what Kucherov got. Tkachuk's always ask for too much $$. He's a valuable player but I don't see much of an upgrade for FLA in the short term. As others have stated, it depends on what happens with Hubs and Weegar.

Could be a disaster if Huberdog decline. Or if he not resign.

Huberdeau is not in his mid thirties, or 'on the wrong side of 30'. He is 29 and scored 11 more points than Tkachuk last season. He's not going to decline for a few years still, depends on the length of extension he might get, but he's a legit player for the foreseeable future. Plus a top 2D in Weegar. Plus a first round pick. Plus a B prospect. People saying 'they won't sign in Calgary' is pure conjecture based on exactly zero evidence. Hyperbolic nonsense. Calgary swapped two American players who ??perhaps?? wanted to go closer to home/made it public they wouldn't re-sign with two Canadian players, a B prospect and a first round pick. Considering the bind they were in I don't see how this could be perceived as anything but a massive win for the Flames who have had a devastating week so far.

I think you are entirely correct. Other than for St. Louis and Edmonton fans who run from one thread to another making delusional comments, most folks will see this as a good move by the Flames.

Huberdeau is a great technical skater, he has a great stride and easily falls into the small group of players that can sustain their performance into their mid 30's.

People worried about declines should look at Tkachuks skating or his 43 points in the previous season

77 point career high before last year playing with Gaudreau and Lindholm too

Yep its the Blues fans who were making low offers and saying "fine, we will just take him for nothing in a year"

how did that work out?

Still a long shot but if Calgary gets Kadri, they can be as good or better than last year.

Folks forget that cap gets even tighter next year and the year after. Lots of good talent still looking for a contract. Huberdeau signs long term deal in Calgary.

All this is true, but you seem to be forgetting the Flames also got Weegar, a decent prospect, and a first round pick.

A signed Tkachuk is worth a signed Huberdeau and maybe a first.
